So, I went skateboarding last weekend for the first time in years. I went to 3 different parks including a great park in Wheeling West Virginia that is all concrete. Bowls and a street course. It brought back memories of all the years that I skated and mostly about skating in my early teens at the Turf Skatepark in Milwaukee, which was closed 15 years ago. This morning I saw that the buildings on that site were knocked down to make room for a road project. Sure enough, someone had the idea to see it the bowls still existed and started shoveling! Check out this news clip to see what they found! I wish I could get back to Milwaukee this weekend.

Is it true? Can "BIG BUSINESS" actually do something that is good and meaningful? Well, this looks like a heck of a good start. Braddock, PA is a little town outside of Pittsburgh that is the poorest community in PA. There are some really interesting people doing creative things while trying to bring the town back to life. Levi's did an ad campaign for their new line of "work wear" in Braddock and in turn donated a ton of money to the city and they are making a documentary on the rebuilding of this devastated town. Puma City: World's First Large Scale Mobile Building

Create an 11,000 square foot building that contains a retail store, lounge, event space, and offices. And by the way, the building needs to be assembled and disassembled a number of times at different harbor sites around the world over the span of a year. That’s the challenge that NYC based architects LOT-EK faced when they began work on the Puma City project. The building is traveling around the world with the 70-foot long Puma sailing boat – il Mostro – which is competing in the 2008 Volvo Ocean Race.

Their solution started with using a material they are fond of and have lots of experience working with, shipping containers. The team fitted out 24 containers. But the issue of the building being assembled in a variety of countries presented the biggest challenges. It had to adhere to the international building code. The plug-in electrical and heating and air-conditioning needed to be adaptable to the region. And the assembly needed to be easy enough that crews around the world speaking different languages could assist.

Today is the day that we have all been waiting for! The opening of "Where the Wild Things Are"! I can not wait to see what Spike Jones has done with one of my favorite childhood stories. This story has a special place in our families hearts as it was a bedtime staple when our son was growing up.

Urban Outfitters experimental retail space, "Space 1520" in Los Angeles has a WTWTA Pop-Up shop this month. I think the highlight of the shop is Christian Joy's 5 one-of-a-kind costumes that are inspired by Maurice Sendak's characters in WTWTA. You might know Chirstian Joy's work if you are a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. NPR is offering a free preview of the new Flaming Lip's album "The Sparrow Looks Up At The Machine" in it's entirety! I have been a huge Lips fan for years. I love that they are always following their own path.
The new album was assembled by taking their favorite part taken from hours and hours of jam tapes. The overall sound is very organic in nature. All of the expected elements are there, the melodic vocals, blown out gigantic drums, crazy guitar and electronic soundscapes along with a new feel to their sound. You really just need to hear it.

We donated a Dinosaur Jr poster that we printed along with a few others a while back. I just came across this picture on flickr showing the print that had been signed by Lou Barlow and found out that it raised $155 for Rock For Kids! For those not familiar with Rock For Kids, they raise money to provide music lessons for children who wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise. Being musicians ourselves and having two children that are musicians, We feel honored to have been able to participate.

In a dream-combination of sustainability and mobility, Brooklyn based artist Kevin Cyr has taken the idea of a mobile home to a new level. He has created two concept designs that swap gasoline fueled vehicles with human power as the force that propels movable living structures.

His Camper Kart examines habitats and housing; recycling and ecology; exploration and mobility by fusing a pop-up camper with a shopping cart. And the Camper Bike, which is actually a functioning sculptural piece, continues this idea by taking an in-bed truck trailer and putting it on top of a serious looking 3 wheeled bicycle.

While neither one of these inventions may be practical for most people, they do show off some interesting possible living alternatives.

If you want to see Cyr’s work in person, he has an upcoming show in Provincetown, MA, which opens this Friday.

Whodathunk!?! Cari is currently living and working in various spots around Chicago. I was able to get in touch with her and I am hoping that we will infact be able to arrange for a shoot together. "Rough Trade Records are delighted to announce the signing of 21 year old Mica Levi AKA Micachu. Her debut album ‘Jewellery’ is released on Rough Trade Records on March 9th. So, a quick introduction, Bjork is said to be a fan of Micachu and can probably identify with another artist brave enough to take pop music into entirely uncharted territory. Micachu is largely inspired by Harry Partch who famously used an array of customized and home made instruments."

I have owned a collection of art by Chicago artist, Harry Bouras (1931-1990) for over 15 years. I have finally done a fair job of cataloging the collection and posting the photos online. I would love to hear from other collectors of Bouras' work. I am also interested in talking to any collectors, art dealers or galleries that may be interested in purchasing the collection or including it in a show.

Most of the work that I own in from the late 60's / early 70's. I have over 100 original photos and negatives, a sketchbook, and dozens of original pieces of art. The majority of the work if from Harry's DV8 series, featuring the "mushroom" icon which appeared in Bouras' work as early as 1963. The "mushroom" has represented, among other things, the atomic bomb, male and female, the population explosion, a phallus and a threat to individual liberty.

Envelope Project

Here is an envelope that I made to give my friend Max a birthday gift. I used paper that I have used to do test prints while setting up poster jobs. I have a big stack of paper that I keep just for test prints. I just keep adding to them until I think they look good as is. I want to design a line of paper products using this sort of collage method of printing. What do you think? Envelopes, tags, notebooks, cards, stationary?

I have an idea too, to do a t-shirt line using a set of screens, maybe a dozen or so, and make shirts using various combinations of the screens. Every shirt will be unique yet look like a line. I am thinking of calling it "The Screen Set Collection". Then there can be numerous sets over time. Yeah, I like that. If you steal my idea, you will have bad luck for 6 months.

The Future of Transportation

I think that I have found the most exciting vehicle ever! The Canadian design company, "Verdier", has developed a new, self sufficient, van based on the original VW Westfalia concept. I spent at least 10 years driving a couple of different Vanagons. I do believe that Vanagons are one of the best designed vehicles, ever.

Marc Ecko interview

I am always curious to hear people's life stories. I am particularly interested in hearing how people have pursued their passions and made something of it. Whether that be a business, a movement, whatever.

One story that I just stumbled across was an interview with fashion mogul, Marc Ecko (Marc Ecko Enterprises, Ecko Unlimited, Complex Magazine, Zoo York, Marc Ecko Cut & Sew, Avirex, G-Unit Clothing Company, etc) Now, I am not necessarily a fan of the products that Marc Ecko puts out, I am fascinated with the idea that one person (and their team) can do so much. How do you start selling t-shirts out of your apartment and grow that into a dozen different companies?

New Poster for Qui!

We are very excited to show our latest poster for David Yow's (of Jezus Lizard / Scratch Acid) new band QUI!!! We are huge fans of Yow and we took it upon ourselves to make this poster for him. No, we did not get permission or paid to do this poster. We did it on our own free will. I am much more excited to be doing posters "guerrilla style" rather than waiting around for a commission and then tweaking the art to meet everyone's fancy.

The Qui poster was illustrated by MODESTo's old friend, tattoo artist, Josh Stoneberg. Josh and I have talk about collaborating on posters for years now. This is our first of many, I am sure.

We then hand screenprinted these babies at the MODESTo Studio. We decided to print them using 4 color process in attempts to capture all of the fine detail and colors in Josh's original color pencil drawing.

Perry Farrell takes over Milwaukee!!!!!

Today, Perry Farrell was in town with his new band, The Satellite Party. To tell the truth, I was not impressed by the new groups music and did not have much interest in catching their show tonight. I then got the last minute announcement that were giving a free show in the afternoon in the Beans & Barley parking lot and decided, have to go!

I thought it would be a great experience to take both of the kids to (hopefully) see Perry up close and personal. The show exceeded our expectations! The little stage was about 18' high and we were right up front for the performance.

The Satellite Party kicked out a song off of their new album (so-so), then what I think was a Porno for Pyros song and yes....2 Jane's Addiction songs!!!! It was Perry in all of his glory! I thought that I would never get to see Jane's Addiction live. This satisfied me to say the least.

After their short set, Perry was nice enough to talk with fans, sign autographs and pose for photos. I was very happy that my whole family was able to go to the show and we were able to get a group photo with Perry!! Look out for Christmas cards this year!!

Hello all..... after fighting the urge many many times to create a blog, I figured....'tis time. I hope to have enough time to maintain it so it is not a dead spot on the wonderful world wide web. I hope to document the life and times of MODESTo!

For those not familiar with MODESTo!..let me introduce ourselves. MODESTo! is the love child of Brad and Stephanie Towell. We currently live in the wonderful, Milwaukee, WI.
